JOB TITLE Building Custodian

REPORTS TO Building Principal and/or Superintendent

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and accomplish assigned work
  • Ability to provide a safe, attractive, and comfortable school environment 
  • Ability to function within the framework of a school environment
  • Ability to work independently without supervision
  • Must clear criminal and child abuse background check
  • Proof of valid drivers license

Preferred

  • High School Diploma or GED; supplemented by demonstrated ability to fulfill the physical

requirements of the work; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and 

experience

  • Experience in school custodial department or related experience

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Cleans and preserves designated spaces, equipment, etc. in assigned buildings so health standards are met
  • Cleans rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture using vacuum cleaners and/or shampooers
  • Sweeps, scrubs, waxes, and/or polishes floors using brooms, mops, and/or powered scrubbers
  • Dusts and polishes furniture, woodwork, metalwork, and fixtures
  • Washes windows and other glass surfaces
  • Empties trash containers, pencil sharpeners, and other receptacles
  • Moves and arranges furniture as required
  • Cleans bathroom toilets and sinks; replaces paper supplies and soap 
  • Assists with the unloading of deliveries
  • Sets up and takes down lunch tables, if assigned to this area
  • Sets up and takes down furniture for special events
  • Fills in for other shift custodial absences as required by administration
  • Makes recommendations to improve service and ensure more efficient operation
  • Examines building and requests repair work for failed equipment
  • Keeps equipment and work area clean and neat
  • Performs minor adjustments and requests repairs to mechanical equipment as needed
  • Follows the chain of command as required
  • Requests supplies and equipment to complete required cleaning
  • Assists the public utilizing the facilities with directions and in obtaining/setting up equipment
  • Acts as a safety and security monitor at all times
  • Assists in securing all rooms, buildings, gates, and facilities after daily use or servicing
  • Utilizes various cleaning agents, mixing according to label instructions, and using in accordance with prescribed safety precautions and directions
  • Loads and unloads washer and dryer, folds dried itemsMaintains good public relations with students, parents, staff, and the community
  • Reports to work each day clean, neat, and in proper attire
  • Completes annual safety training as required by law and district policy
  • Attends in-service training and staff meetings as required
  • Performs related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • General knowledge of, and ability to utilize materials, methods, and equipment used in custodial work
  • Ability to work with interruptions during a work shift
  • Ability to climb, reach, bend, stoop, kneel, sit, and stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift/ carry up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work at heights up to 12 feet
  • Able to operate a buffer/scrubber, wet/dry mops, and vacuum for extended periods of time
  • Able to shovel snow if assigned or this assistance is needed
  • Able to use chemicals with recognized inhalation and absorption hazards
  • Able to work in extreme temperatures, humid, and dusty environments
  • Able to manage one’s time efficiently and carry out assignments with minimal instructions
  • Able to perform duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic
  • Ability to adhere to prescribed routines and practices

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Noise level may be quiet to loud
  • Work may be indoors or outdoors
  • Tobacco and alcohol free environment
  • Work may be alone or with team members
  • Work environment may include exposure to heat, humidity, and dust, and chemicals

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • 12 month position
  • Employment per Board Policies and Administrative Rules and Regulations
  • Performance evaluated annually by supervisor

Evaluation:

  • Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with board policy
  • Evaluation is the responsibility of the supervisor or designee
