414.4 Classified Employee Bereavement Leave

In the event of a death or serious illness of a member of a classified employee’s immediate family, bereavement leave may be granted. Bereavement leave granted may be for a maximum of 6 days, with “day” being defined as one work day regardless of full-time or part-time status of the employee, per occurrence, for the death of a member of the immediate family. The immediate family includes child, spouse, parent, brother, sister, mother-in-law, father-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, or grandparent of the employee.

One of the above days may be used for death and or illness of other relative or close friends. Three of the above days may also be used as a business or personal leave. This is subject to approval of the school administration.

It is within the discretion of the superintendent to determine the number of bereavement leave days to be granted. Three additional days for bereavement, with full pay, may be used for the death and/or serious illness of other relatives or close friends, or for some serious emergency, which may occur affecting the employee. The use of the additional three days is subject to the approval of the superintendent. Request forms will be made through the principal or Board secretary and approval will be obtained from superintendent. The leave shall not accumulate and is charged against the employee’s accumulated sick leave and shall not exceed six days per year.

It is within the discretion of the superintendent to determine the number of bereavement leave days to be granted.
