Job Description
Title: Transportation Director
Reports to: Superintendent
Qualifications: 1. Physical abilities to meet job requirements
- Valid CDL with required endorsement
- Current Iowa School Bus Operator’s Permit
- Ability to provide leadership and supervise personnel in accordance with district policy, state, and federal mandates
- Able to work different shifts, days, and/ or schedule
- Knowledge of bus standards and repair procedures
- Willing to obtain a working knowledge of emergency drill regulations and evacuation procedures
- Knowledge of emergency procedures and problems related to security
- Understanding of inventory control
- Understanding of vehicle maintenance and safety
Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions
- Requires prolonged sitting or standing
- Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials
- Requires stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, and reaching
- Requires climbing and balancing
- Must work indoors and outdoors year-round
- Must work in and around dust, fumes and odors
1. Essential Functions
- Provide clean, safe, and reliable transportation and ensure that all activities conform to state school transportation guidelines
- Work well with others, maintaining positive and effective communication with individuals/departments of the school district and community
- Able to accept directions, changing situations, and work assignments
- Utilize time appropriately and follow all work rules and policies Exemplify good work habits for other employees
- Regularly demonstrate physical, mental, and emotional ability to perform assigned duties
- Dress in appropriate attire, giving special attention to cleanliness, neatness and general grooming
- Show initiative in willingness to assume responsibility by being able to determine priority in work schedule
- Ability to plan constructively for future events, needs or changes (Example: 1. Create or try new products. 2. Try new ways of doing job.)

2. Essential Responsibilities
- Abide by all state school transportation regulations
- Supervise and evaluate work of drivers as required
- Prepare state reports
- Assist in hiring and termination as required
- Provide written and oral reports as required
- Provide a safe work environment for staff
- Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas, and techniques
- Adhere to all district health and safety polices, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan

Coordinate and assist with all mechanical and general maintenance/repairs of district owned buses and vehicles. This would include:
- Maintaining inventory of parts and maintenance supplies
- Ordering parts for repair of district vehicles from vendor
- Ensuring that buses meet safety requirement
- Facilitating and supervising the starting of school buses during cold weather
- Test-driving and diagnosing problems on district equipment
- Establishing and implementing a preventative maintenance program for district owned vehicles. This would include coordinating a summer maintenance of bus fleet in preparation for the following school year.
- Maintain snow removal and building equipment
- Assume responsibilities of school bus driver, special needs school bus driver, or bus associate for students with special needs when needed
- Make emergency repairs on buses or vehicles from other districts
General Responsibilities
Responsible for other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
